To me it looks like a grain hopper for a mash tun; crushed grain goes in top and strike water is pumped through the side spout to mix with grain and prevent dough balls. Maybe screen is just to keep unwanted matter out of there? That would be my guess anyway. Cool display piece, let me know if you decide to sell

yep, it's got a bunch of different stem attachments that screw onto it at the base there
